Image processing: surface inspection with the camera

Carry out a quality check using industrial image processing

Image processing using camera systems for quality control

The use of camera systems for quality monitoring is Nowadays, industry cannot be imagined without it and the applications are diverse. DMC codes can be read to identify products, or patterns or contours can be recognized. Surfaces can be checked for damage, or assemblies can be checked for completeness. Cameras are used to read or compare target and actual values.

Before considering using a camera system, it is important to ensure that the hardware used and the evaluating software are designed and tailored to the specific application. There is a wide range of standard components for recognizing a two-dimensional, highly repeatable feature on a surface. For more specific applications, several optics may need to work together for 3D recognition.

In addition to choosing the right components, a lot can go wrong when designing the application. Camera systems are very sensitive to the lighting conditions of the environment and do not cope well with changing distances. Camera lenses must be kept free of all types of deposits such as dust.

For quality control of embossed writing, for example, it is difficult to determine exactly what is good and what is bad. The camera image may look different when exposed to sunlight or reflected. Slight fluctuations in material or position can cause differences in contrast that are barely perceptible to the human eye, but are suddenly mistakenly recognized as correct. The strong effects of small influences can mean that thousands of images of embossings have to be taken before the camera recognition works reliably. This is often only possible during operation and not during commissioning.

The industrial camera systems offer coordinated complete solutions for this, but also systems that can be combined variably.
