Freely linked stations (matrix assembly)

Planning an assembly from freely linked assembly stations

Matrix assembly

Maximum flexibility is offered by an assembly system in which the stations can be approached without a fixed sequence according to the needs of the product structure and the available capacities in the assembly process. In this matrix assembly modular standardized stations are networked and flexibly linked depending on the product variant, utilization and desired output.

All workstations and stations are equipped with identical equipment and basic functionalities. These can theoretically be reproduced, arranged and networked as required, according to the required capacities.

Logistics and assembly are decoupled from one another in the matrix assembly so that the station selection can be made flexibly. The components and materials are transported flexibly using driverless transport vehicles or manually with transport trolleys.

Advantages:

  • • Continuous adjustment of assembly capacities to current requirements

  • • Different variants and products in one assembly plant

  • • Optimal utilization of resources

  • • Expandability and flexibility

  • • Low susceptibility to failure of the entire system

Challenges:

  • • Increased planning and control effort for the master control system

  • • A functioning system requires a certain amount of excess capacity. There must always be a free station available to carry out the next steps.

Areas of application:

  • • Product portfolio with a wide range of variants and volatile production volumes

  • • Standardized tools and workplace equipment for a large part of the assembly process steps
