2D layout

Determining the space requirements of an assembly line using a 2D layout

Use of a 2D layouts in the planning of an assembly line

In order to assess and determine the exact space requirements for production systems or other applications, a 2D layout is often created after or in parallel to the creation of a block layout. The 2D layout makes it possible to determine the space requirements using already known details of the application or machine. In addition to the space requirements for systems and their parts, this tool is also used to determine the access for material supply.

The space requirements of a system alone or as a group in a hall are difficult to estimate for new buildings or conversions. Therefore, a 2D layout is used: here, the space requirements are iteratively incorporated into the hall layout, from very rough assumptions (first station designs) to the fine contours of the later machines or system parts.

In addition to the system parts, a 2D layout also includes the material supply, flexible station parts and, if necessary, a transport system for the line. Other conditions such as hall pillars, passageways, parking and open spaces are also included and taken into account here if necessary. For this reason, the space requirements of the systems or their arrangement are often different than otherwise absolutely necessary. By iteratively processing the layout, changes in the space requirements can be quickly shown. If, for example, the various stands are placed on top of each other as layers, even an employee who was not responsible for creating the layout can quickly determine what has been changed.

3D layouts are often created on the basis of a 2D layout. One of the biggest advantages of the 2D layout is the avoidance of costly rework on the line and further unplanned investments.
